How to write on your phone like a pro

Your phone offers you a way to research and write wherever you are, and while it will never be as practical or comfortable as sitting down at a desk, it’s a great way to use those moments when you would otherwise simply be waiting around.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, or on trains or buses, you might find that you become a regular smartphone scribbler. If that’s the case, there are a few steps you can take to make it a more productive process:

Use autocorrect wisely

We often associate autocorrect with making unnecessary changes and hampering our writing, but overall it’s a helpful feature. If you find yourself regularly using a long word like “cryptozoology”, your phone will soon learn this and start suggesting it once you type in the first few letters, saving you time.

Get a keyboard

For only a few dollars, invest in a mini keyboard that can be plugged into your phone. This is better for quick, natural typing than the on-screen equivalent on your phone.

Don’t trip up on your sources

Remember that if you have to collate sources and submit them as part of your work, your phone might be using the mobile version of a site. If the URL starts with “m.”, change this to “www.”, and remove the “/amp” from the end of any URLs.
